In his biography explored Brady daguerreotype in a fairly early age. In 1844 opened his own photography studio in New York, which brought him wide popularity. In 1850 he published «Gallery of Illustrious Americans», and five years later successfullyexperimented with the photographic plate mokrokollodionnoy. Then in 1860, Brady began photographing President Lincoln.
Since the beginning of the Civil War was authorized to accompany Matthew, photographthe army. Thanks to the efforts in the biography of Matthew Brady photographs of the manywars have been saved. In 1875 the government bought part of the collection of photographer. In 1954 the Library of Congress acquired the enormous number of shotsBrady.

Rose Greenhow had four daughters. Tragedy struck the family her husband died soon after the birth of the youngest daughter. Her alignment with the Confederate cause grew after her husband's death, and was nurtured by her friendship with noted secessionist John C. Calhoun. Her Southen Sympathies were noted by Washington Secessionists, and she was recruited as a confederate spy. On July 9, 1861, and July 16, 1861, she delivered intelligence to Confederate General P.G.T. Beauregard containing details of McDowell's plans for the First Battle of Bull Run. Confederate President Jefferson Davis credited her efforts with helping to secure the Rebel victory at Bull Run.
